It started with the Beano...
As a child, I made copies of my favourite characters, trying to capture their facial expressions. I remember I once drew a big lion's head in pencil and produced a nice drawing of a BMW motorcycle with that distinctive late 70s fairing...
Unfortunately Mum threw all my early sketchbooks away, along with anything else that she found lying around.
One day Dad found a genuine self portrait by Augustus John in a dustbin and I liked the fine black lines of the etched image. Armed with my first Rotring pen I tried to copy this picture. The result was OK but there was something slightly off about it which I couldn't quite put my finger on.
Then came the Nancy Kominsky TV show which made it all look so easy. Dad made me an easel and I set to work with palette knives and canvas boards...
The results? Somehow, manipulating the paint with a palette knife wasn't easy and I was never happy with the paintings.
Mum threw them all away anyway...
