How Dodgyportraits came about
I discovered that I really enjoyed drawing faces. Some of my first attempts pleased me and this encouraged me to do more. Getting a good likeness is so hard of course and the slightest mistake makes it look like someone completely different. I practised on random faces from books because the likeness didn't matter. I practised the proportions, eyes, lips, noses - things in isolation.
After mum died I was determined to do a portrait of her as a kind of tribute. I did this in acrylics and it ended up looking a bit cartoony which wasn't the desired effect at all, but nevertheless my sister wanted to have it.
I did a friend of ours in oils and the shirt was the best bit - the hair too but the face obviously didn't look very much like him because an artist friend said to me he thought it was good and then asked 'who is it?' even though the subject is a good friend of his too...
I then did my sister's dog as a commission and a friend with his cat in his arms.
And this is how dodgyportraits was born...
